Welcome to Camp Oo-U-La®, where Georgia's burn-injured children can escape the stares they live with every day. Camp Oo-U-La® is the first and only camp to be offered in Georgia exclusively for burn-injured children. The camp is sponsored entirely by the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation, Inc., so it is free to all campers.
Since all the campers and many of the Camp Oo-U-La® staff are burn survivors, just about everyone has scars. One camper said, “I like camp because no one stares; we’re all like me!” At Camp Oo-U-La®, we see the child on the inside, not just the scars on the outside.
Camp Oo-U-La® is dedicated to providing burn-injured children with an opportunity to face social and physical challenges among their peers in an accepting, family-type setting. The goals of Camp Oo-U-La® are:
1. Building self-esteem
2. Learning about nature and self through direct experiences
3. Providing freedom for experimentation and growth outside the expectations of a society based on conformity and physical appearance
4. Providing a social network for children who have had similar experiences
5. Providing an atmosphere of conditionless acceptance and love
6. Teaching the value of responsibility for personal and group actions
7. Providing “purely fun” physical recreation which enhances “formal” physical therapy efforts
8. Providing activities that give children the sense of “conquering” and accomplishment
9. Increasing public awareness of the burn issue, and increasing public recognition and acceptance of burn survivors
